July 19, 2010Over the first half of 2010, the figure has plummeted by 40%, compared to the same period last year.
8.2 thousand buildings were constructed in Ireland between January-June, 6,700 of which are housing units, The Irish Times says, citing data provided by the commercial and residential buildings database GeoDirectory.
The largest share (13%) of all new construction is attributed to the city of Cork.
According to experts, roughly 15,000 units will be built in the country in 2010. For comparison, throughout the last 10 years, the average annual figure was working out 68,000 properties, while the 2007 peaks amounted to 90,000.
