Indonesia to sell off its islands
May 06, 2009Indonesian authorities have announced their plans to sell off several uninhabited islands to residents of other waterlocked states, who loose their homes due to an increase of World Ocean’s level that is caused by the global warming.
Potential buyers are mainly small countries, such as Maldivian islands. The major part of Maldives is already flooded, and the state’s highest point is barely 2.4 meters.
The present initiative has been expressed by Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi. It still has to be approved by the Indonesian president, reports. The edition says that Indonesia itself is far less threatened by this problem: lately only 20 out of 17,480 islands belonging to the state have been flooded.
